Why shouldn't they? Virtually, almost everything can be found online, from basic stuff to rare finds are on displayed in web pages available for everyone to not only feast their eyes on, but actually getting them in a few days time.

And the hallowed vessel from which all these good things go through is the credit card.

The Fraud scare

The one thing that is always at the back of our mind when making online purchases is the fear of fraud. There is the threat that every information that you enter will be stolen by fraudsters. It would a utopia if there is a full fraud-proof way to be immune from online fraud. But, don't loose hope, the credit card is a major tool to safeguard your online purchases at the same time getting everything that you want online.

Fraud-proof plastics

The credit card, versus other modes of payment such as debit card, check or money order, can save you a lot of hassle when making online purchases. It's that inner gut that tells you that a credit card is a lot of safer. Let's see why you get that feeling:

● You have zero liabilities

When a fraudulent activity occurs, (hopefully not..) old-school standards say you'll only be liable for the initial $50, but now, major credit card issuers waive and your liabilities are reduced to nothing. Combining with this feature are some pre-requisites such as a time period of reporting the fraudulent transaction.

● Passwords do the trick

You can get this either at the card issuer's website or the online store. These downloadable passwords serve as added security when making purchases. These passwords are randomly combined by a software and then randomly given also to the person logging on the store. Major credit card issuers have tie-ins to online stores for this feature for verification purposes. Also, there are one-time or “disposable” passwords that are only given at every purchase and cannot be used for eternity.

● Dispute processing

Credit card issuers have dispute departments that handle questionable transactions. But remember, that you are advised to make the initial contact with the merchant to settle, ask for a time table of when the problem and then if the merchant does not adhere, then that's the time that you call your credit card issuer to make the dispute on your behalf.

Save yourself the trouble

Even if using a credit card holds a considerable amount of security on making online purchases, you need to do your part. Always read the the conditions and terms of the purchase. Also, take time to check the reliability of the online store. Make some researches. Also, save the URL or bookmark the acceptance page, or the page that says that the order has been processed. Reliable online stores give tracking numbers so be vigilant to take them down and keep them in a secure place. Get their customer service number. The online store should have one.

Nothing is fool-proof. But this should not prevent you to indulge in shopping over the internet. There are all good stuff that you can imagine and even those you never thought in your wildest dreams that you can get your hands on. Being cautious is what counts.
